10 year old starts woodworking business

Hardest working 10 year old you'll meet.

Hey guys,

Meet Colt.

This is a young fella that came across my feed one day while I was taking a break at the shop.

I was going through a particularly tricky part of a build. I was trying to wrap my head around how to approach it and at the same time have it make sense when I explained it on camera.

A typical day in the office.

Seeing Colt get at it at such a young age reminded me of my younger years in woodworking. A lot of core memories and skills have been built during that time.

I saw my younger self in him.

Here is his story, through the narration of his mother:

“At just ten years old, Colt possesses a passion for woodworking that belies his age. His love for the craft is not just a passing interest but a deep-rooted connection nurtured by his mother, a full-time carpenter who has been his greatest inspiration. From an early age, Colt was drawn to the world of hammers, nails, and sawdust. What began as a simple fascination with tools has grown into a profound desire to master the craft, much like his mother.

Colt's journey into woodworking began in earnest when he started accompanying his mother to job sites. There, amidst the noise of saws and the smell of freshly cut wood, he discovered the joy of creation. He started with small tasks, like driving nails into wood, but quickly became more involved in the projects. His mother, recognizing his potential, began teaching him the intricacies of the trade—drywall framing, installing windows, building stairs, banisters, and even remodeling bathrooms. Colt took to these lessons with remarkable enthusiasm, proving to be especially adept at measurements, a skill that quickly became indispensable to his mother. Together, they formed an unbeatable team, with Colt earning the title of her "right-hand man."

The road hasn't always been easy for Colt. He faced challenges, particularly in overcoming his fear of using new tools. But with his mother's guidance and his own determination, he learned to master each one. Today, Colt confidently handles a sander, chop saw, miter saw, drills, and even a circular saw—tools that many adults would find intimidating.

One day, while scrolling through YouTube shorts, Colt stumbled upon the videos of Matthew Peech, a skilled woodworker. Intrigued, he binge-watched every one of them, absorbing knowledge and inspiration like a sponge. Matthew’s work fueled Colt's own ambitions, expanding his dreams beyond the projects he had already completed.

Colt's goals are clear: he wants to learn every skill in woodworking, eventually building a house from the ground up. His advice to others in the craft is simple yet profound: "Be brave and believe in yourself." It's advice he lives by, and it drives him as he plans his next projects, which include building fence picket coffins and Halloween signs. Colt is especially excited about the Halloween signs—he can't wait to see them adorning houses as he goes trick-or-treating this October.

The first piece of furniture Colt built independently was for a neighbor who needed a step support. Using old decking boards he found lying around, Colt took on the challenge and completed the task with pride. This success spurred him to create a Facebook page, hoping to gain followers and eventually establish an income stream from his woodworking.

Looking ahead, Colt's ambitions extend beyond woodworking. Next year, he plans to learn how to weld, adding yet another skill to his growing repertoire. Driven, talented, and eager to learn, Colt is a young craftsman with a bright future ahead. His story is one of passion, perseverance, and the boundless potential that lies within a young boy who fell in love with woodworking.”
