🌟📈 Expert Woodworking Marketing Tips Inside!

A Woodworking business is no easy task. . .

Hey Woodworking Family!

Matthew here, sharing a slice of my story. My journey in woodworking began at my family's mill, building projects from local wood and upcycled mill parts. This inspired the name "Primitive Millworks," a nod to our roots and the simplicity of woodworking. As we delve into marketing your projects, remember, your brand's story is key.

🛠️🌟 How to Stand Out From the Crowd

1. Branding: What's in a Name?

  • What resonates more with you: "Primitive Millworks" or "Matthew Peech's Woodworking Shop"?

  • Your brand name should reflect your style and the essence of your work.

  • Use ChatGPT to help you brainstorm ideas

    • Ex. “I am starting a woodworking business. I value innovation and simplicity. A lot of my work will be sourced from my family mill as upcycled parts. I want to incorporate that into the name somehow.”

    • ChatGPT Response:

      • “TimelessMill Woodworks”

      • “Prestige Timber”

      • “TimberMill Creations”

2. Getting the Word Out

  • Your personal network is a great starting point for feedback and initial sales.

  • Use social media, local markets, and word-of-mouth to highlight your unique creations.

  • Engage with woodworking groups on Facebook for networking and customer outreach.

3. Pricing Your Projects for Profit

  • Understanding Your Costs: It's crucial to know the cost of materials and the time you invest in each project. This forms the base of your pricing strategy.

  • Custom vs. Bulk Items: Custom items require a different approach. Consider the uniqueness and the additional labor involved.

  • Time Value of Money: Your time is valuable. Ensure you're compensating yourself fairly for the hours spent making.

  • Market Research: Understand what similar items are selling for. This helps in setting competitive yet profitable prices.

4. Where to Sell: Pros and Cons

  • Etsy: Ideal for handmade and unique items.

    • Pros: Large audience, easy to set up.

    • Cons: Competition and fees.

  • Facebook Marketplace: Great for local sales.

    • Pros: Free and easy to use.

    • Cons: Limited to local buyers.

  • Own Website: Full control over your brand.

    • Pros: Build your brand identity, no competition on your site.

    • Cons: Requires more effort in setup and marketing.

  • Amazon Handmade: Access to a vast audience.

    • Pros: High traffic, trusted platform.

    • Cons: Fees and competition.

5. Marketing Tools: QR Codes and Referrals

  • Add a QR code that leads to your website on your products. This makes your projects living referrals and helps customers remember where they bought them.

  • Offer referral bonuses or discounts to existing customers to encourage word-of-mouth marketing.

📸✨  Showcasing Your Masterpiece

Capturing the essence of your woodworking projects through photography is crucial in attracting and engaging your audience. Here's how to make your creations stand out.

Choosing the Right Camera/Device:

  • Smartphones: Modern smartphones have excellent cameras suitable for high-quality photos. Look for phones with good camera specifications, especially in terms of resolution and low-light performance. The more recent iPhone models usually fit the bill.

  • Digital Cameras: For more professional results, consider investing in a DSLR or mirrorless camera. These offer greater control over settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO (low light performance).

Set Design and Background:

  • Simplicity is Key: Use a simple, uncluttered background to keep the focus on your creation. Neutral colors like white, gray, or wood textures work well.

  • Context Matters: Occasionally, placing your piece in a staged environment (like a furnished room) can help showcase its functionality and style.

Lighting:

  • Natural Light: Utilize natural light for the best results. Photograph your work near large windows or outdoors on a bright day.

  • Artificial Lighting: If natural light isn't available, use softbox lights or LED panels. Avoid harsh direct light that can create unwanted shadows.

Framing and Composition:

  • Multiple Angles: Capture various angles to show the depth and detail of your work. Include close-ups of unique features or craftsmanship.

  • Rule of Thirds: Use this classic photography principle to create balanced and interesting shots. Imagine your image divided into nine equal segments by two vertical and two horizontal lines. Place the most important elements along these lines or their intersections.

Why It's Important:

Great photography does more than just display your work; it tells a story. It's often the first impression potential customers have of your creations. High-quality images can significantly boost your online presence, enhance your brand's perceived value, and increase sales.

Remember, your photographs are a reflection of your brand and craftsmanship. Investing time and effort into capturing stunning images of your woodworking projects can make a substantial difference in how your audience perceives and interacts with your work.

👨‍🎨 Challenge Accepted - Breaking All The Rules

“Down The Rabbit Hole” featured by the “Wood” Magazine

Imagine a cabinet with a captivating "rabbit hole" right in the middle, leading to a world of hidden compartments and surprises. The centerpiece of this design is the middle section that cleverly flops up, unveiling additional shelving space. It's a blend of practicality and fantasy, bringing a touch of wonder to everyday storage.

As a teenager I had a subscription to “Wood” magazine. Yea I know… what a nerd 😬. It was and still is THE woodworking magazine to learn the trade. So you can imagine how awesome it was when I found out they were wanting to showcase one of MY builds!

Being recognized by "Wood" magazine, a publication I've admired for years, is a dream come true. It's a nod to the creativity and innovation that I strive to bring to every project.
