Gavin’s Inspiring Restoration Project

Hey Woodworking Family,

As a father, there’s nothing more fulfilling than watching your children take on a project and make it their own. One story that warms my heart is about my son Gavin and a 100-year-old factory cart from my "someday" collection.

Just in time for Christmas, Gavin decided to restore and sell this vintage cart. It was an ambitious project, but he approached it with enthusiasm and dedication. This cart, made of solid oak with original cast iron wheels, was a heavy-duty relic of the past, covered in layers of paint and rust.

Gavin disassembled the cart and meticulously sanded through several layers of paint, revealing the beautiful natural colors of the wood. He left a bit of each layer to showcase its history and then distressed the wood to the perfect level. To finish, he applied teak oil, making it suitable as an indoor sofa table or an outdoor porch decoration.

But what truly stood out to me was how he handled the wheels. The cast iron wheels were completely rusted, and instead of taking the easy route and painting them black like most, Gavin spent hours sanding and polishing them to achieve a unique industrial look. The result was stunning, a blend of industrial primitive Americana that was both functional and beautiful.

Seeing Gavin’s hard work and creativity reminded me of the importance of teaching our children practical skills. These lessons are not just about the task at hand but about fostering a sense of accomplishment and self-reliance.
